Don’t Fall for the Venmo Scam
Imagine opening your phone and discovering that someone you don’t know just sent you $1,000 through Venmo.
At first, it might feel like you just got lucky. Moments later, you receive a message:
“I’m so sorry! I accidentally sent you the money. Can you please send it back?”
It sounds like an honest mistake, but in many cases, it’s actually the beginning of a scam. Scammers often use stolen or compromised credit cards to fund a payment through a peer-to-peer payment app like Venmo. After sending money to an unsuspecting person, they’ll quickly contact the recipient and ask for the money to be returned. Wanting to do the right thing, many people send the money back immediately. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what the scammer is counting on. When the true owner of the stolen credit card discovers the fraudulent transaction, they report it to their credit card company. The original payment is eventually reversed. Here’s the problem: In this example, that’s $1,000 out of your own pocket. If you receive an unexpected payment from someone you don’t know: Instead, allow the payment platform to handle the situation. Contact Venmo through the app or their customer support channels and report the unexpected payment. They can determine whether the transaction was legitimate and reverse it appropriately if necessary. Scammers are constantly finding new ways to trick people into sending money. The best defense is knowing how these scams work before they happen. When in doubt, pause, verify, and contact the payment platform directly.
